You’ve got a burning question, and an idea of how to answer it! The basis of outstanding research. Now is the perfect time to ensure that your research project will run smoothly and safely by considering all aspects of responsible research conduct and appropriate governance.
There may be several angles of considerations to plan for in your research, including funding sources, safety and wellbeing, ethics, and governance frameworks. Some responsible research conduct processes can take more than 6 weeks to complete, so be sure to incorporate these into your research plan timeframe.
For example, if clinical trials involving people are likely to be a component of your research, an application must be prepared for the relevant Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) followed by a Site Specific Assessment (SSA). While this process is relatively streamlined in Australia, it can still take 4 – 8 weeks from submission to approval. To help you with good research design incorporating clinical trials, read the Australian Clinical Trials guide, found here.
You’ve designed your experiments, completed the risk assessments, finalised the approvals and you’re ready to do some research!
Your research is underway. You have a detailed plan and have already started seeing some results to shape the direction of your next hypothesis. Implementation is only part of the job, though – monitoring and reporting are integral components of responsible research conduct.
The main portion of your research design has been completed, and you’re close to finalising this project. Before moving on to the next question, there are some loose ends to tie up. Part of responsible conduct of research is ensuring the responsible dissemination of research findings and ongoing management of data and materials..
